History

Columbia SC has a deep rooted history that is being curated and shared more and more each day. Explore Black History walking tours in Columbia focusing on the post-Civil War Reconstruction Era and the Civil Rights Movement. Visually take in this history through the City’s mural project paying homage to Civil Rights trailblazers like Sara Mae Fleming and depicting Columbia’s own Black Wall Street. Or learn about Columbia in the early 19th to mid-20th century at Historic Columbia’s four house museums. The histories are told using an inclusive narrative representing all of the people who lived on those properties

Pimento Cheese

Did you know that the first published recipe for pimento cheese is from Columbia SC! And we invented the pimento cheeseburger? That’s right, it was in Columbia where someone had the brilliant idea to slather pimento cheese on a hamburger. Here, we serve this Southern staple in so many unique and delicious ways that we developed a Pimento Cheese Passport so visitors can dive in. From traditional to a vegan option to pizza, pimento cheese is a part of the culinary lifestyle in Columbia SC.

Unexpected Outdoor Experiences

Our region embodies the city meets nature theme with the Congaree River flowing just minutes from downtown, accessible river walks, parks with kayaking, tubing, hiking and biking trails, and we’re the home of Congaree National Park, the state’s only national park, where each spring you can find fireflies frolicking and lighting up the bed of the old growth bottomland forest. Add to that the many outdoor festivals, al fresco and rooftop dining, balmy temperatures and a weekly open-air market that takes over the city’s downtown and Columbia SC offers a true outdoor experience.
